The Philadelphia Phillies’ current skid might cause them to miss the postseason.

The Phillies lost 2-0 to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, putting them in a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL’s second wild card slot.

In the three games against the Cubs, the Phillies managed just three runs of offense.

They are at 83-72 after dropping 10 of their past 13. They’re currently in third place in the National League East, behind the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.

Philadelphia has just gone through its second five-game losing skid in as many weeks. Losses of 5-3 to the Miami Marlins on September 15 and 18-11 to the Toronto Blue Jays on September 20 capped a losing streak of 5 games in a row for them.

Prior to Thursday’s defeat, Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson told reporters that the squad lacked a feeling of urgency, despite its previous struggles.

“Not much more than is typical; I believe they’re relatively peaceful right now, having fun,” Thomson added. “Hopefully they’re having a good time, but we have to win some games, that’s just part of the job.”

Now that the Phillies are in danger of missing the playoffs, it may be time for them to show some urgency, particularly in their next series against the 54-101 Washington Nationals.

The Phillies have won all but two games against the Nationals this season, and it’s critical that they win this weekend’s series against Washington since they’ll finish the year with a three-game series against the American League’s best, the Houston Astros.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, the Brewers have an easier schedule to finish the season. They begin a four-game series against the 64-91 Miami Marlins on Thursday and have won two of three games against the team this season.

Milwaukee finishes the season with a three-game series against the 72-84 Arizona Diamondbacks, despite they are 1-3 versus the team this season.

Phillies and Brewers to tie breaker?

If the Phillies and Brewers finish the regular season deadlocked for the last wild card berth, the winner will be decided by a tiebreaker.

The head-to-head record between the two participating teams serves as the first tiebreaker. This year, the Phillies defeated the Brewers in four out of their six games played, therefore they would be the club moving on to the postseason.

The club with the best intra-divisional record would have been chosen to go to the playoffs if it hadn’t broken the tie.
