Harry Maguire is key to England’s World Cup chances, according to Gareth Southgate
Gareth Southgate, England manager, has launched a passionate defense of Harry Maguire, arguing that the Three Lions need him to win the World Cup.
Maguire’s form with Manchester United plummeted last season after a brilliant Euro 2020 campaign. He has subsequently lost his starting spot in the Red Devils’ squad to summer signing Lisandro Martinez.
Maguire’s performances for England have mainly been above board since, although he was at fault for Germany’s opening in Monday’s 3-3 draw and was claimed to have waited two hours after the game to debate his status in the squad with Southgate.
Southgate explained why he has continued to use Maguire despite his worrying decrease in form after the game.
“I know everyone thinks he’s important to me, but he’s important to us – not to me,” he said.
Harry Maguire Says
“Why did we choose him?” Because he is one of the players who provides us with the highest possibility of victory. So, basically, we should all desire a Harry Maguire who plays consistently and with confidence.
“That applies to quite a few players, but he’s the one on whom everything falls, which must be a difficult area for him.”
“He’s shown incredible character. I believe he has the character to overcome this since he has moved from Sheffield United to Hull City. He’s not the kind where everything goes smoothly.
“Sometimes you have boys who haven’t had to deal with difficulty in their early career, and when it strikes them, it’s tougher to cope with.” He’s like most of us in that he’s faced a lot of challenges, and that forms your character.”
